Dog Food Advice
Information and advice about dog food and caring for your dog

Food allergies account for about ten percent of all the allergies seen in dogs. They also generally account for twenty percent of the causes of itching and scratching in dogs. Just how a pet becomes sensitized to a particular agent in the food, which in turn creates a complicated antibody response in the dog’s intestinal tract, is not very well understood.

Although there is very little understanding of food allergies and the canines, we have developed methods to determine the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of allergies. They may be present in a dog 5 months or later, although most cases occur when the animal is 2 to 6 years. Dog food allergies can be given to help men and women, young.

The symptoms created by food allergies are a lot like other allergy symptoms found in dogs. Perhaps the most common sign is itchy skin on the face, ears, forelegs, armpits, and feet. Other signs may include hair loss, hot spots, or skin and ear infections. It’s also possible for the dog to have more bowel movements on a daily basis when an allergy is present. Most symptoms can be eliminated when given antibiotics, but return when the medication has been stopped.

To begin diagnosing a possible dog food allergy, pet owners must put their dog on a food trial. This involves starting a new diet for your dog, and only allowing him to eat that specific food for 12 weeks. Protein and carbohydrates are the two factors of the diet. Protein can be gained from rabbit or venison and you can incorporate potatoes for carbs. Nothing else should be eaten by the dog in the 12 week trial, including flavored medications, rawhide, or dog treats. It’s a good idea to supervise the animal so he doesn’t eat any outside trash or leftovers. After the 12 weeks, you can put the pet back on his regular diet. If the signs return after he is put back on his original diet, a food allergy is diagnosed.

The best dog food for allergies is to make homemade meals, that would be free of all that can trigger allergy symptoms. Start a few ingredients, and gradually increase to determine exactly what you are allergic. For example, add the meat they eat in their diet over the last 2 weeks. If none of the signs appeared, the ingredient is safe, and new foods can be added. If symptoms persist, you will know exactly what that dog can not eat.
